SmartZone Duct & Damper System
|
Ecojay SmartZone dampers are professional grade, heavy-duty quality. Made in the USA using the best parts and materials available. 5 year limited warranty. Gasket-blade insures a tight air seal when closed and allows unobstructed air flow when open. Heavy gauge galvanized steel ribbed can & aluminum rectangular construction for long term reliability even under harsh OPERATING conditions. flexibility for a wide range of applications. a zoning system can typically use the same duct sizing as a traditional single-thermostat system. EXCEPTION: Increase the duct Diameter by one size for each zone less than 25% of the total system air flow capacity. Also, for systems with more than 4 zones, increasing the duct & damper sizes of the smaller zones (or all the zones) can minimize the amount of pressure relief needed.
Zone Balance
To maintain optimal equipment performance in a typical zoning application, it is preferable for all zones to be similar in size. (in terms of CFM). NOT that every zone must have EXACTLY the same CFM, but the system will work most effectively if they are close to the same size. NOTE: try to avoid zones smaller than 20% of the total equipment CFM capacity especially when using single speed equipment, This will ensure best performance.

Air Noise
To minimize air noise, Install the dampers as close as possible to the supply plenum. A good rule for acceptable air noise = supply duct provide 600 -700 FPM Velocity airflow. Use the “small CFM” chart in the bypass sizing section to check round duct size(s) that will achieve this FPM Velocity range.
- FOR ZONES WITH MULTIPLE DAMPERS, the total zone cfm is the sum of all the dampers (use “small cfm”)
- For rectangle duct, use “small CFM” equation from bypass sizing
Bypass Damper
A bypass system consists of a duct connecting the supply plenum to the return air plenum. A “bypass” damper is installed in this duct that opens/closes automatically to maintain constant Pressure inside the supply air duct when zones open and close. With the correct size bypass damper installed and adjusted properly, it will fully CLOSE when all zones are calling (no air bypassing) and will OPEN proportionately as zone dampers close. NOTE: always measure the airflow after configuration to ensure proper operation.

Pressure Relief
Bypass is only one method of “pressure relief”. Installation of Dampers/duct correctly can reduce the amount of pressure relief necessary. Leaking air, increasing DUCT SIZE, using minimum open setting on the dampers can keep bypass minimized. Also, using 2nd stage lockout to reduce airflow when only 1 zone is calling is another pressure relief method for minimizing the amount of bypass air needed.
Return Air
RETURN duct should be large enough to accommodate HI SPEED blower CFM. ALL zones should have airflow path to return air grill equal to or greater than the zone CFM. return air ducts & registers not sized or located correctly can result in problems like increased run time & Insufficient airflow.
